Choosing planters with a base from GRÖNFELD is a decision based on both functionality and protection. A fixed base in your planter serves several purposes: it provides increased stability to the entire structure, it contains soil and moisture, and most importantly, it protects the surface below—whether it is tiles, wood, or an indoor floor. Our planters are the result of Danish design craftsmanship, where we unite "Scandinavian simplicity" with materials capable of withstanding the changeable Nordic weather for decades.
The technical difference between Classic and PRO bases
We have optimized our base solutions according to where and how they are to be used:
- Classic Series: The base matches the planter's material in 1.5 mm aluminum. This creates a lightweight yet strong construction, ideal for private gardens and balconies. The base helps stiffen the box, allowing it to function as a sturdy, freestanding unit.
- PRO Series: For professional use or very large planters, we utilize a reinforced base made of black-lacquered, galvanized steel. This plate is extremely rigid and prevents the box from twisting under the immense weight of large quantities of soil and water. This is fundamental if the box is also to be equipped with wheels or legs.
Both types are, of course, assembled using our tool-free click system, allowing you to quickly establish your green space.
Indoor use and watertight solutions
If you plan to bring nature inside with GRÖNFELD planters, a base is essential. However, please note that while our planters with bases are tight enough to contain soil, indoor use on delicate floors requires our special watertight liner. This liner ensures that no moisture seeps through to the surface below. It is important to handle the liner with care to avoid punctures. With this combination, you can create green oases in the living room or office with the same stylish aesthetic as in the garden, backed by our 10-year rust guarantee on all painted aluminum surfaces.
Advantages of the base in kitchen gardens and on roof terraces
In the kitchen garden, planters with a base act as an effective barrier against weeds from below, making it easier to maintain 100% control over soil quality. For roof terraces, these models are brilliant as they distribute weight evenly and prevent roots from penetrating the roof structure. To ensure the best growing conditions in a closed box, we always recommend integrating the WaterUps self-watering system. This creates a reservoir at the bottom that the plants can draw from, significantly reducing the need for daily watering.
